Ana María Edwin, director of The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), today assured that the organisation never claimed “that a person can eat well for $6 a day,” arguing that there is a smear campaign against INDEC spreading misleading messages.
In a column written by Edwin for Tiempo Argentino today she defends the official statistics in response to the accusations from the cabinet chief of Córdoba, Oscar González.
When official inflation data were presented last week, González questioned Economy Minister Hernán Lorenzino for showing graphs that he said “were drawn up by the same ‘jugglers’ that work at INDEC, who say ‘you can eat well for $6 a day’.”
Edwin replied by saying that González is “ignorant and a liar” and that he is a “tiny character”, adding that his allegations were unfounded. The INDEC director added that the organisation measures “not inflation, but variations in consumer prices.”
Today the board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is expected to determine whether or not to apply sanctions to Argentina for not having regularised their statistics according to the recommendations given by the IMF.
