President Kirchner Defends Political “Model”

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner headed up the independence celebrations at the triple border yesterday. Speaking to the tens of thousands in attendance, the president strongly defended her and her husband and predecessor’s administrations and called for the citizens of Argentina to defend the “Model,” ahead of the midterm polls.

As the celebrations were underway to mark the 199th anniversary of independence in the northern province of Misiones yesterday, President Kirchner said “Six years ago today we started a process of transformation in this country to make dreams a reality,”

She was referring to the day former president and deputy candidate for Buenos Aires province Néstor Kirchner took office.

Yesterday, the Justice Minister for Argentina, Horacio Rosatti, said at a press conference that he condemned the fact that Nestor Kirchner was still planning on running for election in the upcoming polls. Kirchner is not legally a citizen in Buenos Aires due to the fact that he does not own property within the city limits. He accused the government of bending the rules to allow one of their own to stand.

Other critics claimed that Nestor Kirchner does not expect to win. They claim he is standing in order to benefit his party by manipulating Argentine constitutional laws. President Kirchner has not commented on this fact.
