The Indy Eye: Celebrating Peru

The Indy Eye: Celebrating Peru

The Peruvian community celebrated 191 years of independence from Spain over the weekend with an event on Avenida de Mayo between Chacabuco and Plaza de Mayo. Traditional dancers in colorful dresses twirled down the street to the stage at the base of the Plaza. Ave de Mayo was lined on both side with food vendors and the smells of grilled chicken, freshly fried churros and more tempted hungry passersby to open their wallets and fill their stomachs. Photographer Beatrice Murch was on hand to document a bit of the morning’s festivities.

The Indy Eye: Isidoro Cañones Statue

The Indy Eye: Isidoro Cañones Statue

A new statue of cartoon favorite Isidoro Cañones by Dante Quinterno was unveiled Friday 20th July in San Telmo on the corner of Chile and Balcarce. This is the second such statue to be placed in San Telmo, the first being Mafalda in 2009 just up the block, at the corner of Chile and Defensa. Eventually, there will be ten statues through San Telmo, leading to Moreno and Paseo Colon where you can pick up a free city bike to ride across Puerto Madero to the Museo del Humor along Avenida de Los Italianos. Along with cartoonist Manuel Garcia Ferre, the Buenos Aires city government was out in full force, with city mayor Mauricio Macri, deputy mayor María Eugenia Vidal, minister of culture Hernana Lombardi, and Cabinet Chief Horacio Rodríguez Larreta all in attendance to unveil the statue. Manuel Garcia Ferre, a famous Argentine cartoonist, responsible for ‘SuperHijitus’, ‘Ico, the brave horse’ and ‘Anteojito’ and more was on hand to represent cartoonists and the Museo del Humor. A dixieland jazz style music band, dressed in red and white pin-striped suits, set the jovial tone for the afternoon’s event. Photographer Beatrice Murch snapped these up.

The Indy Eye: Rainbow Warrior III in Buenos Aires

The Indy Eye: Rainbow Warrior III in Buenos Aires

Greenpeace’s flagship the “Rainbow Warrior III” has arrived in Buenos Aires to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the environmental NGO. The ship arrived on 11th July and will remain in Buenos Aires through this following weekend. She is the successor of two former ships who had the same names (Rainbow Warrior and Rainbow Warrior II). The first ship was sunk in 1985 by the French secret service when Greenpeace tried to prevent nuclear testing in the South Pacific. The latest incarnation of the Rainbow Warrior is a technological marvel with state-of-the-art communications systems, four inflatable boats, and a helicopter landing pad. The costs were covered completely by individual donations, as Greenpeace doesn’t accept donations from companies or political parties. Photographer Beatrice Murch brings you a sample of what you can see if you visit the ship this weekend. The ship is open to the public this Friday 20th and Saturday 21st July, 10am to 6pm; Sunday 22nd July, 10am to 4pm. Dársena Norte number 6 (Puerto Madero, next to Buquebús). See map here. Free admission and bicycle parking is available.

The Indy Eye: Second Annual Buenos Aires Chili Cookoff

The Indy Eye: Second Annual Buenos Aires Chili Cookoff

In celebration of the US Independence Day on 4th July, we bring you a photo essay from last Sunday’s Buenos Aires Chili Cookoff. This second annual event raised just over $12,000 for charity Send a Child to School – SACS which “helps an increasing number of children each year by providing the school supplies essential for a successful education. Each child receives a backpack containing notebooks, paper, pencils, erasers (as required by grade level), as well as shoes, socks and the regulation lab coat.” With 17 entrants bringing at least five litres of chili each, there was a lot of beans and meat on a grey winter’s day in Palermo. Johnny Deutsch from Magdalena’s Party won the coveted John Brister Chili trophy this year for his lamb and pork entry with a hint of chocolate and expresso. Photographers Anita Zaror, Beatrice Murch, Dan Perlman, Paige Nichols, San Telmo Loft, and Skye Lucking all share their photos of the spicy afternoon with our readers below. As an added bonus, you can see several full on 360˚ panoramic views of the event courtesy of Vamos360.

The Indy Eye: Protests shut down Buenos Aires

Several protests brought the city of Buenos Aires to a standstill last week. On Tuesday 26th June, protestors commemorated the ten year anniversary of the Avellaneda Massacre where two young men, Darío and Maxi were killed by police during a protest by the piqueteros demanding better living conditions at the peak of the social and economic crisis. On Wednesday 27th June, protestors began gathering in the morning in the Plaza de Mayo and around the Obelisk for what the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) hoped to be a 150,000 person demonstration in the afternoon. Photographers Diego Espinosa, Patricio Guillamón, and Patricio Murphy were on hand to cover the events.
