On this day, at 9:53 am, 18 years ago, 85 people lost their lives and over 300 were wounded in a bombing on the Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA), a Jewish community centre in the Once neighbourhood.
Since the attacks in 1994, there have been no convictions and investigations pertaining to the motivations have been inconclusive.
Guillermo Borger, president of the AMIA, expressed his concern that justice for the 85 victims has not been found but went on to say “this is the only government that has collaborated [with us] to investigate the cause.”
In 2009, the Supreme Court ordered Carlos Telleldín, owner of the vehicle that carried the bomb into the community centre, to be re-tried. Since then, further investigations have also opened possibilities that there were international terrorist connections to the attack, specifically with Hezbollah.
As well as the acts of individual players, families of the victims have asked that officials be questioned and held accountable where due. Amongst them are Jorge “el Fino” Palacios, former head of the Federal Police Antiterrorist Unit and former chief of Metropolitan police and current city mayor, Mauricio Macri.
“To activate the memory is fundamental, but not enough, we need justice now,” said Borger.
The 1994 attack was second to the 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy that killed 29 and injured over 200.
