New ‘Evita’ Hundred Peso Bill in Circulation

The Argentine Central Bank (BCRA) announced today that the new hundred peso notes commemorating the 60th anniversary of Eva Perón’s death are now officially in circulation.

The BCRA reported that first batch of 20 million hundred peso notes would go on the streets today. The notes carry new security measures that include watermarks featuring a portrait of Eva Peron and are designed to be the safest notes yet.

According to President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner these will progressively replace the hundred peso notes currently in circulation, which carry the image of Julio Argentino Roca.

The introduction of the Eva Perón notes was believed to be a one-off commemorative event before President Fernandez’s announcement in July that they would eventually replace the 1,800 million Roca notes.

Although early rumours had claimed that the new bills would only be available at bank counters due to incompatibility with ATMs, sources from the BCRA said yesterday that ATMs had been modified in order to distribute them.

The BCRA also announced that 4,985,000 new Malvinas commemorative two peso coins will be made available from today, marking the 30th anniversary of the Malvinas/Falklands war. Two peso coins have been in circulation since December 2011 and were also introduced by President Fernandez’s government.
