Train Car Derailment at Retiro Leaves 31 Injured

Thirty-one people were injured when the last passenger car of a Mitre line train derailed and crashed into a cable tower as the train was approaching Retiro station. The cable tower then fell onto the train car.

According to the Operational Management Union (UGO), the train was about 600 meteres from the Retiro platform when the derailment occurred. The train had been traveling from Tigre.

Six injured were taken to Juan A. Fernández, Cosme Argerich, and Santa Lucía hospitals. Another 25 commuters were treated on the scene.

Mitre line services Tigre-Belgrano, Tigre-Bartolomé Mitre, José León Suárez-Colegiales y Mitre-José León Suárez have been interrupted, according to the UGO.

According to an eye witness, the train car derailed to the right, crashing into the tower. Because the train was close to the Retiro station, passengers were able to walk to the platform.

The reason for the derailment is still being investigated.
