Mexico: A Critical Time for Human Rights

Share/Bookmark

Alberto Herrera Aragón, director of Amnesty International in Mexico, has said the country is going through a critical time in terms of human rights. This came during his presentation of the organisation’s 2010 survey.

During his speech, Herrera Aragón emphasised the kidnapping and murder of dozens of people in recent years. Furthermore, he spoke of the inefficiency of eradicating violence against women. He said that the more than 300 women killed in Chihuahua make the organisation think that there is a historical debt with regard to Human Rights.

For Amnesty in Mexico, 2010 was a year of unfulfilled promises because there was no prosecution office to work on behalf of journalists. Furthermore, Alberto Herrera Aragón said that the authorities had failed in their promise to face up to abuse in Mexico.

Amnesty received new information about the abuse of members of the armed forces as well as those in the federal and state authorities.
