This morning, Argentine Naval Prefecture agents gathered in La Boca, Puerto Madero and Tigre in protest of a recent drastic wage decrease.
Members of the maritime security force claim that their wages have, in some cases, been cut by more than half following a government decree signed by President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Security minister Nilda Garré.
Decree 1307 was published officially on 4th September and has led to wage reductions of between 30% and 60% amongst the prefecture agents. According to a La Nación source, wages have been cut by as much as $2900 per month.
The secretary for National Security, Sergio Berni, made an appearance at the Edificio Guardacostas in Puerto Madero, where the naval officers were protesting. He issued a statement saying that he recognised “the discontent of the targeted sectors” and declared that he was doing all he could to “reverse the situation”.
According to Página 12 the protest was “peaceful”.
The Argentine Naval Prefecture forms part of the national coast guard and those that are protesting are currently deployed in the South Belt Security Force.
Members of the National Gendarmerie are assessing whether or not to join the protest, after their wages were also affected by the decree.
