The Argentine ambassador in Guatemala, Ernesto López, today confirmed that the body of the renowned folk singer will be flown back tomorrow. He also confirmed that the wife of the murdered singer and the rest of his family will not fly to Guatemala to accompany the body.
It was expressed by López that the family was “very hurt and simply unable’ to accompany the body. It was originally thought that Cabral’s wife of 15 years, Silvia Pousa, would be responsible for the repatriation of the body.
Cabral was shot on Saturday in what the Guatemalan government maintains was an attempt of the life of business owner and concert promoter, Henry Fariña. The singer was travelling with Fariña , who was also seriously wounded, to the airport. Cabral received 18 gunshot wounds.
Cabral’s body is currently at a funeral home in Guatemala City without any public access. There have also been vigils held in Guatemala in homage to the singer.
The UN has backed an investigation into the murder. Cabral was a designated worldwide messenger of peace by the organisation. Spokesman for the investigation, Diego Álvarez said that “All I am able to say is that we found a vehicle that may have been used in the attack abandoned on the outskirts of the city”.
