Voting for Foreign Residents Still Up For Debate

As well as the option for voting for youth at the age of 16 from 18, the Frente para la Victoria (FPV) is also analysing whether foreign residents of Argentina will be able to vote in the next election.

Marcel Fuentes, official senator and president of the Commission of Constitutional Affairs, confirmed that there was still no decision. He added that the number of years as a resident may be included in whether or not one has the right to vote.

Opposed to this is deputy Francisco de Narvaez saying that this particular topic under debate, permitting foreigners to vote in national elections, may be against the constitution and also out of fear that outside national interests would interfere in local politics.

Fuentes responded saying that the project could still be possible, saying that they should not look at outside influences as enemies.

Although senator Fuentes said that the possibility of this vote is very important, it’s not necessary to develop it at the same time as the looking at the vote for 16 year olds.

A change in the law would mean that the votership would expand by approximately three million as well as makingArgentinathe most ‘permissive’ country for voting.

Other countries that allow 16 year olds to vote are Austria, Brazil,Cuba and Nicaragua. There are fewer that allow foreign residents to vote, where Chile allows it after five years of residence and Uruguay after 15 years.
