Today at 4.30pm, Hebe de Bonafini, head of the “Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo” will be awarded the Rodolfo Walsh Prize by the school of journalism of the University of La Plata.
This human rights advocacy award is given to those who have demonstrated continuous and consistent commitment in telling the truth and democratic values. Rodolfo Walsh was a writer and journalist who disappeared on 25th March 1977 after he published an open letter to the military junta.
Bonafini is being recognised for her ongoing work with the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo amongst which the radio La Voz de las Madres, the review Sueños Compartidos, the university Universidad Popular Madres de Plaza de Mayo and more than 1.280 marches in name of the desaparecidos (http://bit.ly/ldz660)
Although the prize underlines their hard work, it comes in a time of scandal. Bonafini has been in the headlines for the past several weeks, as former financial manager of the foundation Sergio Schoklender, is accused of money laundering and embezzlement of government funds. (http://bit.ly/kZjbcW)
The daughter of Rodolfo Walshstrongly expressed her disapproval. She said the attribution was being given in “a terrible situation” and called it a “provocative act” saying that “being involved, as is happening to Hebe, the management of public funds, is a terrible circumstance to receive an award in relation to Human Rights”.
