Two Arrested in Murder of Healthcare Worker

A father and son have been arrested for the murder of a nurse, Walter Navarro, from the pediatric unit, ‘Claudio Zin’, of the Malvinas Argentinas.

Sources say that the detained were their prime suspects Joan Cannella, 24, and his father, Juan Domingo Cannella. They were taken to a provincial holding this morning called Manuel Alberti by detectives from the Delegation Department of Investigations of San Isidro.

Two chief of police explained how Joan Cannella became the prime suspect when his identification was found inside a wallet that was beside the car that the nurse was a part of the scene of the crime.

Another source told Telam that the identification of Juan Domingo Cannella was also found in the wallet.

There is speculation that the crime may have been motivated by the mafia, saying that the victim may have spoken out against the health system of Malvinas Argentinas.

The murder happened on Tuesday around 8:15pm, when Navarro arrived at his house and was met by two men who got out of their Citröen C4.

Navarro’s stepson was asked to comment on the issue.

“The theory that it was a robbery, is not possible. He wasn’t missing anything; they could have robbed his truck, could have taken everything from his wallet, could have taken all the money that was around, but nothing like that happened,” he added.

Mexico: ‘La Bonita’ Detained

MEXICO - Anel Violeta Noriega Rios, 27, the alleged operative of a Mexican criminal cartel is now in custody in Mexico after being arrested in California last week.

Known by her alias “La Bonita” or “The Pretty One”, she was the subject of a five million-peso reward by Mexican authorities. She has been at large since a 64-page criminal warrant was issued in January 2010 in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.

Rios is an alleged member of La Familia cartel based in the Mexican state of Michoacan but she operated from the U.S.

Mexican authorities have reported that Noriega Rios helped oversee the cartel’s methamphetamine distribution activities in California and Washington state.

The cartel also is allegedly engaged in cocaine and marijuana trafficking, kidnapping, extortion, and producing methamphetamine for export to the United States.

Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) officers and U.S. marshals arrested Noriega Rios last week at her El Monte, California residence.

Noriega Rios was arrested on “administrative immigration violations.” Two days later she was turned over to Mexican authorities at the border crossing in San Ysidro, California where she will face charges listed in her 64-page warrant.

Last month, coordination between US and Mexican officials led to the indictment of 14 in connection to a horse racing scheme in New Mexico, which was being used to launder drug money.

Records from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security show that Noriega Rios had been arrested and repatriated to Mexico five times between 2004 and 2005. However, according to ICE officials, she had no U.S. criminal convictions.

Latin America: Suspected Anonymous Hackers Arrested

Twenty-five activists allegedly linked to the anonymous hacker movement Anonymous have been arrested in a broad sweep across Latin America.

National law enforcements, under the direction of Interpol’s Latin American Working Group on Information Technology Crime, have clamped down on hackers in Argentina, Spain, Chile and Colombia.

The arrests are part of the ongoing operation ‘Unmask’, which launched in mid-February following several reports that emerged of activists publishing confidential data. Colombia’s ministry of defence and the Chilean electricity company Endesa, who is responsible for the controversial hydroelectric project HidroAysén, have been some of the identified targets.

Interpol has not released information on how it uncovered the 25 suspects. The international organization, which has its headquarters in Lyon, France, has no powers to arrest or investigate suspects. It works rather in tandem with police forces, advancing the sharing of intelligence.

Anonymous is an anarchic international group of hackers and activists who champion the freedom of the internet. Since they have no official command structure nor membership base, it is not yet known what impact the arrests will have.

A message released on the blog of Anonymous Iberoamerica said the suspects were infiltrated not through “intelligence work or informatics,” but rather through “the use of spies and informants within the movement.”

Shortly after the arrests occurred, Interpol’s official website was infiltrated by anonymous activists. The suspects, aged between 17 and 40, are reputedly planning their own counterattack.

Nine people remain accused of alleged hacking crimes in Argentina, following four raids conducted by the federal police in Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Tucumán last Friday.

Anonymous has become increasingly politicised in recent months, with its campaigns focusing on the SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) legislation, aimed at curbing online piracy.

Chile: A Young Mapuche is Arrested

Chilean police force arrested 15-year-old Patricio Queipul Millanao, a member of the indigenous community Temucuicui, a Mapuche group.
After he was arrested, Queipul Millanao was taken to the second police station of city Collipulli, in the province of Malleco. There he was subject to the anti-terrorism law but his family was not reported on his condition.
The mapuche was charged with conspiracy, armed robbery, arson and attempted murder. The same happened with other members of the Mapuche community Cacique José Guiñon.
Patricio Millanao had gone into hiding after the Public Ministry had accused him of being responsible of various bomb attacks in the area.
Millanao will be defended by Sebastián Saavedra and Pablo Ortega, attorneys from NGO Liberar (Release), as sources from the Temocuicui community confirmed.
They expressed that this episode “deprives the boy of his rights to live as a Mapuche” and pointed out Millanao “has no education and cannot defend himself”.
